Dozens of Local 79 members and their families volunteered their time on Saturday, June 21 and Sunday, June 22 to clean up Wingate Park in Brooklyn and Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens. Projects included debris removal, trail maintenance and painting. Local 79 Joins Actors Federal Credit Union

Local 79 recently received membership in Actors Federal Credit Union (ActorsFCU). As of July 1, 2014, Local 79 members and staff can apply to open up accounts at ActorsFCU. Credit unions are not-for-profit financial institutions that offer services similar to those of a commercial bank.

Local 79 to Participate in Labor Day Parade

All Local 79 members are encouraged to come to the 2014 New York City Labor Day Parade, whose theme this year is “One City. Five Boroughs. All Workers.” The parade begins at 10:30 am on Saturday, September 6, 2014 and will kick off at 45th Street between 5th and 6th Avenue. The parade is organized by the New York City Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO.

Over 1,100 Local 79 members and their families came to Local 79’s Health Fair at Coleman Country Day Camp on June 7 and enjoyed beautiful sunshine, delicious food, non-stop music and activities, and a wide array of health screenings. The health screenings included blood pressure and heart rate readings, pulmonary tests, cholesterol and glucose screenings, and lots of information from various health care providers. At a June 5th luncheon attended by nearly a thousand people, Local 79 member Erika Glen Byam received one of Nontraditional Employment for Women’s (NEW) Equity Leadership Awards. For over 35 years, NEW has prepared, trained, and placed women in careers in the skilled construction, utility, and maintenance trades.
