Local 79 Volunteers to Clean Up Flushing Meadows-Corona Park

Over 200 Local 79 members volunteered on Sunday, May 21 to help clean up Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. After a hard day’s work, Local 79 had laid a new stone path through a swampy trail, laid woodchips for children’s play areas and picked up trashed throughout the park. Local 79 members are proud participants in their communities and look forward to volunteering again in the future.

Good times were had by all at Local 79’s Annual Holiday Party at the Terrace on the Park on December 21st, 2016.

Local 79 members had much to celebrate at the end of 2016. It is the hard-work of Local 79 men and women that ensures their families have a happy holiday and are ready for the New Year. We look forward to celebrating our accomplishments again next year.

Recently, Local 79 members received a mailing from the National Life Insurance Company. This company provides all Local 79 members and retirees with a $4,000 Accidental Death and Dismemberment benefit at no charge to them or to Local 79. Local 79 and FDNY HEART 9/11 Mission: 40 Homes in Five Days

This past week, the HEART 9/11 Ecuador Team (volunteers from Local 79 and the FDNY) partnered with the global architectural firm Perkins Eastman and Hogar de Cristo to build emergency houses in Salinas de San Vicente, the earthquake’s epicenter. Forty homes were built in five days with all manual tools: hammers, nails, and post hole diggers.

On June 24, 10 members of Local 79 will join 10 members of HEART 9/11 on a relief mission to Ecuador, where they will donate a week of their time and labor to help build 100 pre-fab homes for families who lost their houses in the devastating earthquake on April 16 of this year. Local 79 20th Anniversary/Health Fair Huge Success!

Nearly 1000 Local 79 members and their families enjoyed a sunny day full of fun, food, family, and friendship at Local 79’s 20th Anniversary Party and Health Fair at Coleman Country Day Camp. Nurses, provided courtesy of the NYS Laborers, carried out health screenings, health care vendors gave out information and giveaways, and members and their families enjoyed an all-day BBQ, swimming, pony rides, inflatable slides, raffles for a variety of prizes, and much more. A great day was had by all!

In a series of rallies that have increased in size, intensity, and outrage, Local 79 members and members of other construction unions have been coming out in force to protest non-union contractor Gilbane. Rallies have been held at various Gilbane sites throughout the City, including the latest one on May 25 which drew thousands of workers. The message to Gilbane is loud and clear: Change your non-union practices or you will be run out of our City!
