20th Anniversary of Apprenticeship Program

Local 79 celebrated its newest journeyworkers on the 20th anniversary of the founding of our apprenticeship program. New York State Department of Labor Commissioner Roberta Reardon spoke highly of our newly graduated apprentices, proclaiming that “they represent the future of New York City.” Commissioner Reardon advised the graduates to “Stand up for your union, show up for your union and vote for your union, because your union is what you invest in it.” Business Manager Mike Prohaska then led all graduates in the Oath of …

#CountMeIn Rally with Governor Cuomo

Over 15,000 union members came together at Union Square to join together in solidarity and say “Count Me In!” with Governor Andrew Cuomo. NYC Building Trades President Gary LaBarbera lead proceedings and announced that the Building Trades Executive Board unanimously endorsed Governor Cuomo in his bid for reelection. The Governor assured all in attendance that “Your fight is my fight. You can COUNT ME IN to stand with the hardworking New Yorkers that build this city!”

Local 79 Health Fair

Local 79 Health Fair

Over 500 Local 79 members and their families came out to Coleman Country Day Camp for a day of fun of at Local 79’s Health Fair. All joined together for an all-day barbeque and participated in fun activities, like basketball, volleyball, pony rides, soccer, miniature golf, music, dancing, face painting, inflatables, hula hoop and more. Also, everyone received free health screenings courtesy of the NY State Laborers Health and Safety Fund. The members of Local 79 work hard everyday to provide for the loved ones. …

On May 11, hundreds of Local 79 retirees gathered at Marina del Rey in the Bronx for the annual Retiree Spring Luncheon. With beautiful views of the water and the Whitestone and Throgs Neck Bridges, retirees ate, danced, and enjoyed the company of their spouses, fellow retirees, and members of Local 79’s Executive Board, Business Agents, and other Local 79 staff.

May Day 2018

May Day 2018

On May Day, Local 79 members and thousands of other workers, immigrants, and allies jointed together in Washington Square Park  for a celebration and rally featuring dynamic speakers, musical performances, and community members. Member William Uyaguari spoke at the event and rallied the crowd to fight for the rights of all immigrant workers.

10,000 union brothers and sisters stretched over two blocks of Times Square to declare New York City is a Union Town! The #CountMeIn Movement stood united and sent a message to developers that the NYC Building Trades members will not be divided in their fight for fairness. ATTENTION LOCAL 79 MEMBERS:

YOU DO NOT NEED A 30-HOUR OSHA!!

Local Law 196 requires by March 1, 2018 EITHER:
A 10-Hour OSHA OR
A 30-Hour OSHA

Then by December 1, 2018 EITHER:
A 10-Hour OSHA and 20 Hours of additional
training specified by the Dept. of Buildings OR
A 30-Hour OSHA OR
Completion of an apprenticeship program

Then by May 1, 2019 EITHER:
An OSHA 10, the additional 20 hours, plus
another 10-25 hours of training specified by
the Department OR

An OSHA 30 plus 10-25 additional hours of
training specified by the Department OR
Completion of an apprenticeship program.
