November 3, 2022 (Brooklyn, NY): Today at 4:30 p.m., NYC Council Member Crystal Hudson, Laborers’ Local 79, and community members will hold a candlelight vigil for a construction worker who was killed yesterday at Rabsky Group’s construction site at 625 Fulton Street in Brooklyn. The construction worker at this nonunion construction site fatally fell during the installation of a sidewalk shed with an I-beam on top of him, according to the NYC Department of Buildings.

Speakers at the vigil will highlight the persistent dangers and risks of nonunion construction sites, where a number of workers have been killed and fallen to their deaths in recent years.

A city violation was previously issued for 625 Fulton Street for “failure to designate and/or have site safety manager or site safety coordinator present at site as required.” And CIP Services, LLC, a subcontractor at the 625 Fulton Street construction site, has previously failed to comply with workers’ comp and disability benefits law. Galaxy Developers, LLC is the general contractor at the site.

“There is an epidemic of construction worker deaths in New York City and the vast majority of those who perish labor on nonunion jobsites.  I should not be commenting every month on the death of a worker.  This must stop.  Every worker deserves to return home at the end of the day.  Laborers Local 79 demands justice for every killed or injured worker in New York City.  I extend the deepest sympathy from myself and our 17,000 members to the family of this fallen worker.  I promise you our union will fight until no other family receives a call that their loved one is not coming home.” – Michael Prohaska, Business Manager of the Mason Tenders District Council
