On October 9, hundreds of Local 79 members joined hundreds of members of other building trades and members of the Hotel Trades Council at a raucous noontime rally at 133 Greenwich Street in lower Manhattan. The rally was held outside a non-union hotel construction site, where Cava Construction, a notorious non-union contractor, is the general contractor. One of Cava Construction’s subcontractors at 133 Greenwich Street is Park Side Construction, a company with a history of safety violations. Park Side was overseeing concrete work at the West 37th Street non-union hotel construction site where a concrete slab crushed a worker to death on September 30, 2014. Organizers from Local 79 led the rally, reminding the assembled crowd that these kinds of non-union construction projects have no place in New York City. They also asked workers from all the trades to come to the site every day during their lunch hour to make their voices heard until this job turns union.
