On Tuesday, May 12, the (inaptly named) New York State Association for Affordable Housing (NYSAFAH) held their annual conference in New York City. NYSAFAH is an association that, among other things, opposes prevailing wages and transparency about the way in which public subsidies are doled out to NYSAFAH members. Over the past years, media outlets have carried numerous stories about NYSAFAH members being found guilty of millions of dollars in wage theft. Local 79 Members: Albany Rally Alert!

Local 79 members are encouraged to come to a rally in Albany to ensure that any extension of 421-a, the tax abatement program for wealthy developers, contains provisions ensuring that the affordable housing built in exchange for the tax breaks will pay workers prevailing wage. Attendance will count towards your mandatory participation. All attendees will receive a $100 stipend. Lunch and shirts will be provided. Local 79 Tells Community Board 11 to “Build it Union”

Business Manager Mike Prohaska and over 100 loud and proud Local 79 members came out in a blizzard Thursday night to demand union jobs and affordable housing.  Our members stood side by side with CASA and other allies from the Real Affordability For All coalition to makes sure that the 75 block Bronx rezoning serves the needs of Bronx residents, not the needs of irresponsible developers.  The whole City may have heard the chant: Whose Bronx? Justice for Homeowners

Justice for Homeowners On January 15, a number of Local 79 members attended a Justice for Homeowners meeting to hear speakers, including Public Advocate Letitia James, State Assemblyman Keith Wright, and homeowners, address issues related to the Department of Housing Preservation and Development’s lack of transparency and poor oversight of public subsidies used for the development of affordable housing.
