In an effort to understand the varied childcare needs of Local 79 members, Local 79 is working with The Worker Institute at Cornell to carry out an online survey. Local 79 members have received or will receive a letter shortly explaining the importance of the survey and encouraging members to spend the time necessary to fill out the survey. All information provided on the survey is completely confidential. Local 79 and Make the Road New York Host Immigration Workshop

On Sunday, January 18, dozens of members of Local 79 attended a workshop at the Queens office of Make the Road New York to become educated about President Obama's recent executive order on immigration and the possible impact of the order on Local 79 members and their families. According to a survey, many Local 79 members said they spent $200 or more to have someone prepare their taxes. The New York City Office of Consumer Affairs taxpayer website, which has useful information about no-cost tax preparation, is available by clicking here. Note that you may be able to avoid filing fees if you fit into one of the categories below: If you have dependents and earned less than $53,000 in 2014, you can receive free assistance preparing your tax returns through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. Local 79 recently received membership in Actors Federal Credit Union (ActorsFCU). As of July 1, 2014, Local 79 members and staff can apply to open up accounts at ActorsFCU. Credit unions are not-for-profit financial institutions that offer services similar to those of a commercial bank.
