Park Cleanup Weekend: Local 79 Volunteers Needed

What: Join members of Local 79 on Saturday, May 16 to help clean up Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens. When: Saturday, May 16: Breakfast at 9:00 am. Cleanup project begins at 10:00 am Where: Take the subway to the #7 Willets Point/Shea Stadium station. Walk down the boardwalk and meet at the Passerelle Circle at the entrance to the park. Local 79 Members: Albany Rally Alert!

Local 79 members are encouraged to come to a rally in Albany to ensure that any extension of 421-a, the tax abatement program for wealthy developers, contains provisions ensuring that the affordable housing built in exchange for the tax breaks will pay workers prevailing wage. Attendance will count towards your mandatory participation. All attendees will receive a $100 stipend. Lunch and shirts will be provided. Local 79 Tells Community Board 11 to “Build it Union”

Over two dozen Local 79 members, organizers and staff from affiliates of Local 79 attended Community Board 11’s meeting on Tuesday, March 17, to hand out leaflets and raise serious concerns about the proposed rezoning and development of a property on 120 Street and First Avenue, one of many rezonings planned for East Harlem.  City Council member Ben Kallos, pictured above with Local 79 Business Agent Barrie Smith, spoke to the crowd and made it clear that he was 100% behind the use of union labor for any and all redevelopment in East Harlem.  Speeches given by Local 79 members and [...]

Join the Annual May Day Rally!

On May 1, 2015, Local 79 members will join thousands of workers and community activists  outside billionaire Walmart owner Alice Walton's home on the corner of 60th Street between Park and Lexington Avenue. Rally for Affordable Housing and Union Construction jobs

Business Manager Mike Prohaska and over 100 loud and proud Local 79 members came out in a blizzard Thursday night to demand union jobs and affordable housing.  Our members stood side by side with CASA and other allies from the Real Affordability For All coalition to makes sure that the 75 block Bronx rezoning serves the needs of Bronx residents, not the needs of irresponsible developers.  The whole City may have heard the chant: Whose Bronx?
