Local 79 Tells Gilbane: Go Union or Get Out of Town!

In a series of rallies that have increased in size, intensity, and outrage, Local 79 members and members of other construction unions have been coming out in force to protest non-union contractor Gilbane. Rallies have been held at various Gilbane sites throughout the City, including the latest one on May 25 which drew thousands of workers. The message to Gilbane is loud and clear: Change your non-union practices or you will be run out of our City!

New Date for Local 79 20th Anniversary Celebration and Health Fair: Saturday, June 4th

Join  members of Local 79 and their families for a fun-filled all-day outing. The day will offer members and their families the opportunity to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of Local 79, receive health screenings (blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose) and get health-related information. Activities include swimming, basketball, volleyball, climbing walls, soccer, miniature golf, softball, dancing, and an all-day barbeque. Local 79 Members: Show Your Support for the Strike Against Verizon!

Every Thursday afternoon from 5:00 pm-8:00 pm, until the strike against Verizon is won, Local 79 members are asked to join striking workers in front of the Verizon store at 57 W. 57th Street. We are urging members to come out in force to show their solidarity with the 40,000 CWA brothers and sisters who have been out on strike since April 13th.

Local 79 Volunteers Clean Up Flushing Meadows-Corona Park

On May 15, 2016 nearly 150 Local 79 members and family joined together for the annual park cleanup at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. Local 79 Retiree Spring Luncheon

On May 12, hundreds of Local 79 retirees gathered at Marina del Rey in the Bronx for the annual Retiree Spring Luncheon. With beautiful views of the water and the Whitestone and Throgs Neck Bridges, retirees ate, danced, won raffle prizes, and enjoyed the company of their spouses , fellow retirees, and members of Local 79’s Executive Board, Business Agents, and other Local 79 staff.

Construction Workers Memorial Mass and Rally

On April 28, 2016, hundreds of construction workers, labor leaders, and management gathered at St. Patrick's Cathedral for the annual mass honoring construction workers who lost their lives on New York City construction sites in the past year. Since the previous Memorial Mass in 2015, fourteen of the sixteen workers who lost their lives were working at non-union construction sites.
