On January 19, in recognition of Martin Luther King Day, Local 79 apprentices-in-training joined with staff members from Local 79, the Mason Tenders’ Training Fund, and LECET to carry out a service project with students at the Frederick Douglas Academy in East New York. The service project, organized by Sports and Arts in the Schools, involved writing letters to service men and women overseas, creating artwork to assemble into a peace quilt, and other projects. “We look forward to having our apprentices-in-training carry out service projects like this, ” said Mason Tenders’ Training Fund Apprenticeship Coordinator Timmy Warrington. ‘Members of Local 79 are involved in volunteer work throughout the year in their communities, and it is important that our apprentices not only get the necessary skill training,  but also understand how meaningful volunteer work can be .”
