It is with heavy hearts that we announce our retired brother Fil Ortiz’s passing. His family invites Local 79 brothers and sister to celebrate his life this weekend on Saturday and Sunday March 16th & 17th, from 1-4pm and 6-8pm at Leone Funeral Home 696 4th Ave in Brooklyn.

A union laborer of 38 years, Fil was respected by all whom he worked with as a master at our craft of mason tending. He rose above and beyond the ordinary duties of a laborer, and served as a shop steward. His commitment to our union carried on into his retirement- as the Recording Secretary of the Local 79 Retiree Council, and a year-round activist.

A kind brother with an energetic personality that was contagious to everyone around him, Fil could be found at every rally and volunteer event. He cared deeply about the well being of everybody in our union family, from his fellow retirees, to long time members, to our newer members whom he mentored.

We will miss Fil dearly, and commit to honoring his memory by following his example of unwavering commitment to the brotherhood/sisterhood of Local 79.
