On Sunday, January 18, dozens of members of Local 79 attended a workshop at the Queens office of Make the Road New York to become educated about President Obama's recent executive order on immigration and the possible impact of the order on Local 79 members and their families. Make the Road lawyer Alexia Schapira led the workshop, which covered the key provisions of Obama's executive order and gave members a chance to learn more about Make the Road New York and the free immigration- and naturalization related legal services that are provided by Make the Road to eligible members of Local 79. Business Manager Mike Prohaska Honored by Make the Road New York

On Wednesday evening, November 19, Make the Road New York presented Local 79 Business Manager Mike Prohaska with one of its 2014 Dignity, Community & Power Awards at its annual gala. Joining him in receiving awards were United Steelworkers International President Leo Gerard and City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito. Deborah Axt, the Co-Executive Director of Make the Road New York gave the award to Prohaska after a warm introduction in which she talked about his progressive leadership of Local 79.
