In a series of rallies that have increased in size, intensity, and outrage, Local 79 members and members of other construction unions have been coming out in force to protest non-union contractor Gilbane. Rallies have been held at various Gilbane sites throughout the City, including the latest one on May 25 which drew thousands of workers. The message to Gilbane is loud and clear: Change your non-union practices or you will be run out of our City!
Every Thursday afternoon from 5:00 pm-8:00 pm, until the strike against Verizon is won, Local 79 members are asked to join striking workers in front of the Verizon store at 57 W. 57th Street. We are urging members to come out in force to show their solidarity with the 40,000 CWA brothers and sisters who have been out on strike since April 13th.
On April 28, 2016, hundreds of construction workers, labor leaders, and management gathered at St. Patrick's Cathedral for the annual mass honoring construction workers who lost their lives on New York City construction sites in the past year.
