Hundreds of Local 79 members joined a crowd of many thousands for the annual African American Day Parade in Harlem. Members gathered at 113th Street where they received distinctive t-shirts and awaited their turn to march alongside the Local 79 float as it made its way down Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard. Unions and community organizations throughout New York City were represented at the festive parade, as were numerous high school marching bands. Local 79 Business Agent Barrie Smith, one of the organizers of the march, said he was “proud to see so many union brothers and sisters come out for the parade.” He [...]

Walk for St. Mary’s Kids

Labor Day Parade 2017

2017-09-12T15:39:19-04:00

Over 700 Laborers Local 79 members and their families came out to show their Union Pride with others in the Labor movement. It was by far the largest Local 79 turnout ever. Our local is at our strongest when we come together. Throngs of onlookers lined the streets as cries of “Whose City? Our City” echoed off the buildings while a sea of Local 79 workers in LiUNA orange t-shirts proceeded up the corridor.. Although Labor Day represents for many ‘just a day off from work,’ for labor it represents a day to honor labor and its many struggles over the years.
