Local 79 and Make the Road New York Host Immigration Workshop

On Sunday, January 18, dozens of members of Local 79 attended a workshop at the Queens office of Make the Road New York to become educated about President Obama's recent executive order on immigration and the possible impact of the order on Local 79 members and their families. Make the Road lawyer Alexia Schapira led the workshop, which covered the key provisions of Obama's executive order and gave members a chance to learn more about Make the Road New York and the free immigration- and naturalization related legal services that are provided by Make the Road to eligible members of Local 79. Immigration Forum Draws Hundreds of Members

Hundreds of Local 79 members and their families came to Local 79's Immigration Forum on April 6, 2014. Speakers included LiUNA General President Terry O'Sullivan, Local 79 Business Manager Mike Prohaska, LiUNA Assistant Director of Legislative Affairs Yvette-Pena O'Sullivan, Senator Charles Schumer, Congressman Joseph Crowley, NY State Senator Jose Peralta, NY State Assemblyman Francisco Moya, and four attorneys from Make the Road New York. Immigration Reform Now!: Local 79 Joins Rally in Washington DC

On Tuesday, October 8, four buses filled with Local 79 members and their families arrived in Washington DC to participate in the Camino Americano rally. The rally was organized in support of broad immigration legislation, a top priority of LiUNA  and of Local 79. Included in the legislation, which has already passed the Senate, is a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. As many of you know, immigration reform is one of the top priorities of LiUNA. In an effort to provide the membership with information related to immigration and immigration reform, Local 79 is presenting an Immigration Forum at St. Vartan Church on the afternoon of Sunday, April 6th from 2:00-5:00 pm.
