May Day Rally Draws Huge Crowd

Hundreds of Local 79 members joined well over a thousand workers from various unions to celebrate May Day 2014 with a rally near New York City Hall. Under beautiful sunny skies, labor leaders and politicians spoke about the ongoing struggles faced by working people in New York City. Many spoke of the continuing struggles of working people in an economy that has increasingly seen the largest share of income go to the 1%. At the same time, many speakers voiced  optimism that the climate in New York City for working people and unions has changed due to the election of a new mayor. Affordable Housing March on August 20

Local 79 members are strongly encouraged to join a march for affordable housing and good jobs, sponsored by Real Affordability for All, a coalition of community groups and labor unions. Let's make it loud and clear that good jobs are an indispensable part of the new administration's affordable housing initiative. Rally Alert: Protest Against Lettire Construction

Why: After having stolen millions of $$$'s from workers on previous jobs in New York City, Lettire Construction is trying to make a comeback in Brooklyn. Local 79 will be joining community groups in Brooklyn this Saturday to protest the presence of Lettire in the Flatbush community. Immigration Forum

As many of you know, immigration reform is one of the top priorities of LiUNA. In an effort to provide the membership with information related to immigration and immigration reform, Local 79 is presenting an Immigration Forum at St. Vartan Church on the afternoon of Sunday, April 6th from 2:00-5:00 pm. The forum, which will be presented in Spanish (with simultaneous Spanish-to-English interpretation over headsets) will address  the following topics: LiUNA’s position on immigration issues; the current state of immigration reform legislation in Congress;  issues related to Deferred  Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA); rights of undocumented workers;  and immigration services available [...]
