Local 79 and “Community Voices Heard” Form New Partnership

As recently as eight years ago, 98% of New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) construction was built by non-union labor. After partnering with NYCHA residents and community groups, Local 79 successfully organized the vast majority of NYCHA construction projects. On the afternoon of August 20, 2014, members of Local 79 joined "Real Affordability for All," a coalition of labor, faith, and social justice groups, to listen to speakers at the First Corinthian Baptist Church in Harlem demand affordable housing and good jobs in New York City, Afterwards, the groups made a spirited march down Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard to the State Office Building Plaza on 125th Street. Ecuadorean Day Parade Draws Huge Crowd

  Ecuadorean pride overflowed in the streets of Queens on Sunday, August 3rd as thousands of people marched in the annual Ecuadorean Day Parade. Local 79 was well represented as over 300 members and their families took part in the march and the festivities that followed. "This is a day that our members look forward to every year," said Local 79 Business Agent Luis Montalvo. "The Ecuadorean community is such a vital part of the fabric of New York City, and this spirited parade is a great way to celebrate its contributions."

Election Day Volunteers Needed

Local 79 is encouraging its members to assist with the reelection of Governor Cuomo, Attorney General Schneiderman, and Controller DiNapoli on Tuesday, November 4. Members can fulfill their yearly mandatory participation day by assisting with the reelection effort, Please report after work to either Painters DC 9 at 45 West 14th Street in Manhattan, where members can sign in with Local 79 Political Director Mike McGuire, or to the Painters DC 9 Training Fund at 45-15 36th Street in Long Island City, where members can sign in with Organizer Steve Andujar. As previously announced, Local 79 recently received membership in Actors Federal Credit Union (ActorsFCU).
