Director of World Trade Center Construction Receives Honor from LiUNA General President

LiUNA's General President Terence O'Sullivan attended Local 79's General Membership Meeting on January 21 and presented LiUNA'S highest award to Steve Plate, the Director of World Trade Center Construction and the Deputy Chief of Capital Planning for the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey. Also present at the meeting was LiUNA Vice President and Eastern Regional Manager Raymond M. Pocino. Both O'Sullivan and Pocino thanked Mr. Plate for the leadership he has provided  and continues to provide in overseeing the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site. Local 79 and Make the Road New York Host Immigration Workshop

On Sunday, January 18, dozens of members of Local 79 attended a workshop at the Queens office of Make the Road New York to become educated about President Obama's recent executive order on immigration and the possible impact of the order on Local 79 members and their families. Make the Road lawyer Alexia Schapira led the workshop, which covered the key provisions of Obama's executive order and gave members a chance to learn more about Make the Road New York and the free immigration- and naturalization related legal services that are provided by Make the Road to eligible members of Local 79. Local 79 Apprentices Volunteer for MLK Day

On January 19, in recognition of Martin Luther King Day, Local 79 apprentices-in-training joined with staff members from Local 79, the Mason Tenders' Training Fund, and LECET to carry out a service project with students at the Frederick Douglas Academy in East New York. The service project, organized by Sports and Arts in the Schools, involved writing letters to service men and women overseas, creating artwork to assemble into a peace quilt, and other projects. Justice for Homeowners

Justice for Homeowners On January 15, a number of Local 79 members attended a Justice for Homeowners meeting to hear speakers, including Public Advocate Letitia James, State Assemblyman Keith Wright, and homeowners, address issues related to the Department of Housing Preservation and Development’s lack of transparency and poor oversight of public subsidies used for the development of affordable housing. Members Have $4,000 Benefit at No Cost

Death and Dismemberment Insurance Benefit All Local 79 members and retirees are automatically enrolled and eligible to receive a $4,000 Accidental Death and Dismemberment benefit provided by the National Income Life Insurance Company. You do not need to fill out anything to be eligible to receive this benefit. However, if you wish to designate a beneficiary and receive a certificate of coverage, you will need to fill out the blue card that was recently sent to many of you by the National Income Life Insurance Company and send it back to them in the envelope they provided. According to a survey, many Local 79 members said they spent $200 or more to have someone prepare their taxes. The New York City Office of Consumer Affairs taxpayer website, which has useful information about no-cost tax preparation, is available by clicking here. Note that you may be able to avoid filing fees if you fit into one of the categories below: If you have dependents and earned less than $53,000 in 2014, you can receive free assistance preparing your tax returns through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.
