Local 79 Volunteers to Clean Up Flushing Meadows-Corona Park

Over 200 Local 79 members volunteered on Sunday, May 21 to help clean up Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. After a hard day’s work, Local 79 had laid a new stone path through a swampy trail, laid woodchips for children’s play areas and picked up trashed throughout the park. Annual Retiree Spring Luncheon at Villa Barone

On the afternoon of May 7, 2015, hundreds of Local 79 retirees gathered at Villa Barone in the Bronx for Local 79’s festive annual Spring Retiree Luncheon.  The four-hour event featured food, drink, dancing, and prizes—ranging from food baskets to high-end electronic goods—that were raffled off to the lucky winners. The event is one of many sponsored by Local 79 to recognize retirees for the numerous contributions they have made over the years to ensure the continued strength and vitality of the Local.

Labor Committee for Latin American Advancement Honors Local 79 Business Manager Mike Prohaska

On the evening of Friday, May 8, Local 79 Business Manager received an award at the annual Labor Committee for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA) gala. The award was given for Prohaska's contributions to the Latino community and to the Latino members of Local 79. Introduced to thunderous applause by LCLAA Executive Board Member and Local 79 Business Agent Louie Montalvo, Prohaska credited all the Latino members of Local 79 in his speech, saying he wished that they could all be at the event because the award truly belonged to them.

Annual Holiday Party for Local 79 Retirees

Hundreds of Local 79 retirees gathered at Russo's on the Bay on Tuesday, December 3 for the annual retiree holiday party. The party began with a number of union leaders thanking the retirees for all their contributions to Locals 66, 78, and 79. Attendees were also greeted with the good news that, due to the efforts of  Mason Tenders' District Council Trust Funds Trustees Bobby Bonanza, Mike Prohaska, and Edison Severino, all Local 78 and 79 retirees would receive a 13th check this year from the pension fund. Community Voices Heard Presents Award to Mike Prohaska

  On the evening of Tuesday, December 2, Community Voices Heard (CVH) presented Local 79 Business Manager Mike Prohaska with one of its Shirley Chisholm "Lights of Freedom" Awards at its annual gala. Other honorees receiving awards were NYS Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Elias Foundation Founder and Director Jackie Mann. Rene Companioni, a member of CVH, a past participant in Local 79's "Pre-Apprenticeship Navigation Program," and currently an apprentice at Local 79, presented the honor to Prohaska, thanking him and Local 79 for helping him to gain an understanding of the union, labor history,  and the apprenticeship program. Join the members of Local 79 and their families for a fun-filled all-day outing. The fair offers members and their families the opportunity to receive health screenings (blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose) and get health-related information. Activities include swimming, basketball, volleyball, climbing walls, soccer, miniature golf, softball, raffles, dancing, and an all-day barbeque.
