Jake Labate, son Of Local 79 Business Agent Mike Labate and a member of Laborers’ Local 66 on Long Island, recently had the honor of having President Obama congratulate him on his promotion to sergeant. Jake, who joined the U.S. Army in 2010, is a member of the 173rd Airborne Brigade, based in Vicenza, Italy. His current assignment has him located at a base in Estonia. Jake is proud to be a fourth-generation member of LiUNA, following in the path of his great grandfather, grandfather, and father. “Getting Schooled in Infrastructure” Bus Visit

Over one hundred LiUNA members were present to greet LiUNA’s “Getting Schooled in Infrastructure” bus when it made a lunch-time stop on 41st Street and Sixth Avenue on Wednesday, July 23. The school bus, which has been damaged by a piece of a collapsed bridge, graphically calls attention to the conditions of the nation’s bridges, 30% of which have exceeded their 50-year life span. More generally, it is meant to call attention to the dire state of the nation’s crumbling infrastructure.
