In a major victory for working men and women throughout New York City, a deal was reached for the proposed Astoria Cove project that ensures that union workers will build, maintain and service the project and that 27% of the residential units will be affordable housing, with some monthly rents as low as $800. Thousands Rally Against Non-Union Developer

Hundreds of Local 79 members joined over 5,000 other building trades' union members on Wednesday, October 29th for a rally to protest the contractor JDS's 70-story residential tower that is being built on 57th Street by non-union labor. Union members were joined by a number of politicians, all of whom put forth the same message: There is no place in New York City for non-union rat contractors like JDS. The building trades' unions will continue to organize and ramp up pressure until all contractors sign collective bargaining agreements that assure fair wages, safe working conditions, and decent benefits for their workers.

Local 79 Members from East New York: Please Attend Important Meeting

On Tuesday, December 16 at 6:00 pm, Local 79 members who live in East New York are requested to attend an important meeting where the rezoning of East New York will be discussed. Local 79 wants to make sure that rezoning language ensures that everything will be built be union labor and that there will be community hiring. The meeting will be held at United Community Centers at 613 New Lots Avenue in Brooklyn (between Hendrix and Schenck). Food and beverages will be provided.

As recently as eight years ago, 98% of New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) construction was built by non-union labor. After partnering with NYCHA residents and community groups, Local 79 successfully organized the vast majority of NYCHA construction projects.
