Local 79 members, dressed up in various costumes, gave an unexpected greeting to guests coming to the New York State Association for Affordable Housing’s (NYSAFAH) swanky Annual Summer Cocktail Reception at the Princeton Club on Thursday, July 24. Silenced NYSAFAH workers lay on the sidewalk, while a top-hatted, cigar smoking executive handed out free money, representing the way in which NYSAFAH contractors abuse taxpayer subsidies. Members of Local 79 passed out leaflets expressing outrage that one of NYSAFAH’s major developers would sue affordable housing homeowners who called attention to his firm’s shoddy construction practices. Over one hundred LiUNA members were present to greet LiUNA’s “Getting Schooled in Infrastructure” bus when it made a lunch-time stop on 41st Street and Sixth Avenue on Wednesday, July 23. The school bus, which has been damaged by a piece of a collapsed bridge, graphically calls attention to the conditions of the nation’s bridges, 30% of which have exceeded their 50-year life span. More generally, it is meant to call attention to the dire state of the nation’s crumbling infrastructure. All Local 79 members are encouraged to come to the 2014 New York City Labor Day Parade, whose theme this year is "One City. Five Boroughs. All Workers." The parade begins at 10:30 am on Saturday, September 6, 2014 and will kick off at 45th Street between 5th and 6th Avenue. The parade is organized by the New York City Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO. On the evening of Wednesday, May 28, over 200 people, nearly half of them Queens–based members of Local 79, filled the Insulators Local 12 Hall for a rally in Long Island City, Queens. The Build Up New York City (BUNYC)-sponsored event was held to mobilize community members to ensure that the Astoria Cove Project, a project that includes three tall waterfront towers and two inland towers, will be built union. The developer, Alma Realty, is seeking to rezone the property and BUNYC is demanding that the rezoning language includes guarantees that the proposed project will be responsibly built.
